Course Information:

  • 9:00am-4:00pm Mountain Time

  • Live Online Webinar (via Zoom)

Description:

Transgender and gender-expansive (TGE) individuals may experience a range of mental health concerns, including PTSD, Complex PTSD, depression, dissociative experiences, and gender dysphoria. While EMDR therapy has been effectively used to address various conditions and identities, its application to the unique experiences of TGE individuals remains under-explored.

This TGE-affirming training aims to equip EMDR clinicians with the knowledge and skills to support the mental well-being, self-worth, and resilience of TGE individuals.

Course Objectives:

By completing this CE workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental concepts of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theory

and its intersections with Queer Theory.

  2. Define and discuss key terms and concepts related to working with transgender and

gender-expansive (TGE) individuals. This includes exploring variance in gender identity,

gender expression, sex, and sexual orientation.

  3. Summarize two dominant theories for conceptualizing gender dysphoria (GD) and

present an integrative model for understanding treatment targets.

  4. Describe the treatment of distress associated with gender dysphoria from an AIP

    perspective.

  5. Identify specific pathogenic experiences that exacerbate gender dysphoria and

    stress-related mental health disorders.

  6. Identify a step-by-step EMDR therapy sequence for reducing pathogenic experiences and gender dysphoria-related distress in TGE individuals.
