Thank you for your interest in learning more about how to use EMDR therapy with your gender-expansive clients!

UPDATED Course Information:

  • Saturday, February 3, 2024

  • 9:00am-4:00pm Mountain Time

  • Live Online Webinar (via Zoom)

Description:

Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) people sometimes experience gender dysphoria (GD) in addition to co-occurring issues like PTSD, depression, dissociation, etc. While EMDR therapy has been adapted to help people with diverse experiences and identities and can treat these comorbidities, there is no research to date using EMDR therapy for conceptualizing and treating GD-related distress among TGE people. This TGE-affirming training seeks to educate and train EMDR clinicians to help people who experience distress from GD reduce their suffering and increase their self-worth and resilience. By completing this training, participants will be able to: 1) conceptualize GD through an adaptive information processing (AIP) lens; 2) integrate minority stress and queer theories into EMDR therapy; 3) and implement a sequence of EMDR therapy for healing pathogenic experiences in TGE clients.

Course Objectives:

By completing this CE workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe key concepts of Adaptive Information Processing theory and how it intersects with Queer Theory

  2. Describe key concepts and terms related to working with transgender and gender expansive (TGE) people, including variance in gender identity, gender expression, sex, and sexual orientation

  3. Describe two major theories for conceptualizing gender dysphoria (GD) and an integrative model for understanding treatment targets

  4. Describe the treatment of distress related to gender dysphoria from an Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) perspective

  5. Describe unique pathogenic experiences that exacerbate gender dysphoria and stress-related mental health disorders

  6. Implement a sequence of EMDR therapy for reducing pathogenic experiences and gender dysphoria distress in TGE persons
