Discovered by Dr. Francine Shapiro, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is one of the most researched and utilized methods in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other forms of human distress connected to trauma and adverse life experiences.
Whether your goal is to become an EMDR therapist as a specialty or to integrate EMDR into your existing practice, our EMDR Foundational/Basic training is trauma-informed, compassionate, relational, and culturally-inclusive. New Leaf Trauma Institute has partnered with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness with a curriculum designed by Dr. Jamie Marich. The ICM curriculum equips you to work with real-world clinical presentations from day one, including how to handle complex and developmental trauma, address dissociation, and implement EMDR therapy into your current practice.
The course provided by New Leaf Trauma Institute have received approval by the EMDR International Association, the standards of which require that participants engage in:
22 hours of lecture
20 hours of demonstration/ practicum
10 hours of consultation
Required reading and completing an open-book learner assessment
Michael Kuffel (they/them) is a neurodivergent, genderqueer, and bisexual EMDR therapist, consultant, and trainer. They are licensed as an LCPC in Idaho and as an LMHC in Washington.
Michael has 10 years of clinical mental health experience in the treatment of complex-PTSD, attachment/developmental trauma, and dissociative experiences. They integrate an intersectional, anti-oppression paradigm into their teaching.
Michael earned the following EMDRIA-Approved credentials: EMDR Trained in 2017, EMDRIA-Certified in 2020, EMDRIA-Approved Consultant in 2021, and EMDRIA-Approved Basic & Advanced Trainer in 2024. Additionally, Michael joined the Institute for Creative Mindfulness as a faculty member in 2023. Michael’s CV is available for review here. As a trainer and consultant, Michael is passionate about teaching EMDR therapy in an inclusive and compassionate way and guiding learners to become self-aware, excellent EMDR therapists.

To participate in an EMDRIA-approved basic/foundational training program, you must meet one of the following requirements for eligibility:
A master's or doctoral degree in a clinical mental health-related field (e.g., counseling, marriage & family therapy, social work, psychology, etc.) is required. Although it is not required, it is strongly preferred that you are in active clinical practice and working with clients.
Master’s level students may be permitted to take the course if the trainer receives a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or clinical site supervisor ahead of time. Requests and letters of recommendation can be sent to: registration@newleaftrauma.com. Your registration is not considered complete/confirmed until approval is granted.
Medical Professionals (e.g., master’s level nurses and physicians) are also eligible to take the course if they possess a clinical master’s or doctorate and if their primary specialty is within mental health.
Chemical dependency professionals with a master’s degree or higher may also be eligible to take the course.
CE-Classes.com is the provider of (CEs). Certificates are awarded online after completion of the workshop. Participants print their own certificate after registering at CE-Classes.com, entering a keycode, and completing an evaluation form.

Attendance: Your presence at the entire training is required. No partial credit can be awarded. You have read our EMDR Therapy Basic/Foundational Training Information page prior to registering. Please also note that by taking the training in this online format, you will be required to take a quiz following Part II of the training, in accordance with EMDRIA's guidelines.
Consultation: The EMDRIA-required 10 consultation hours are not included in the cost of online training and must be scheduled on your own time outside of the hours of the training advertised. You have ONE YEAR (12 months) from the time that you begin this training to complete all of the course requirements, including the 10 hours of supplementary consultation that are required for you to receive your Certificate of Completion in EMDR Therapy from New Leaf Trauma Institute. Exceptions can be granted only in extreme circumstances (e.g., a humanitarian crisis, illness or injury). In addition to the course instructor and facilitators, we structure our program so that you are able to work with any of ICM's approved consultants or consultants-in-training for your consultation hours to supplement the online training. Our consultants and CITs represent diverse specializations and variety of price points. In the spirit of ICM's mission, emphasizing trauma-focused care and tailoring the most effective program for our individual trainees, we believe the choice of consultant is important to the overall learning experience. Depending on which consultant and format that you select, you can spend from $200.00-$1000.00 additionally for consultation. The ICM Network: Faculty licensees of the Institute for Creative Mindfulness (ICM) operate their training independently, and in registering for this training, you are registering with New Leaf Trauma Institute, not ICM. If you cancel or need to move this training, please contact the trainer via email at support@newleaftrauma.com. If for some reason you do want to move your training to another ICM network faculty member, you will need to cancel this registration and re-register with the other network member.
Professionalism: Participants agree to attend the full training, arrive on time, and be fully present. Participants agree to reach out to the trainer/facilitators if any unexpected problems arise. Staying present for online learning can come with its unique set of challenges, and you agree to take full responsibility for addressing your needs in the area of grounding and self-care during the training. Participants agree to refrain from all alcohol and illicit drug use during the training and agree to speak with the trainer if you anticipate that your impairment due to prescribed medications might pose a problem during the training. The trainer reserves the right to remove participants at any time if the participant negatively impacts the online learning environment, or for any other reason, at their sole discretion.
Accommodations: We ask that if you are in need of any special accommodations that will allow you to take the training with us online, please email the trainer with any special requests thirty (30) days before the scheduled training. If, during the training, a need for accommodations arise, you are expected to contact your instructor immediately and we will discuss the best possible solution.
Confidentiality: While there is no client relationship or other privilege that would create a duty rising to the level of clinical confidentiality in this training setting, you are expected to respect the confidentiality of other trainees in the group. Trainees who observe a problem with another trainee are expected to bring the problem to the lead trainer or other training staff. Similarly, if a staff member observes an issue with professionalism, they reserve the right to discuss that issue with the lead trainer.
Preparedness for Doing Your Own Work: Throughout the training, you will be expected to participate and engage via questions & answers, discussion, reflection, etc. If you are currently in counseling or being treated for a mental health condition, it is recommended that you speak with your provider, alerting them that you are participating in the training. If you have received a major mental health diagnosis (past or present), you acknowledge that you are taking this training at your own risk, and agree to alert the trainer prior to the start of the training (when possible) if any complications arise. Participants agree to keep the online environment as safe as possible for all involved. If any problems arise, you agree to address them with the instructor.
Correspondence from Training Organization: New Leaf Trauma Institute regularly sends correspondence about the training, including an email confirmation at registration and several emails leading up to each training. Email communication will come directly from the trainer and/or via Podia. Additionally, NLTI may send out emails. If you are not receiving these emails, please check your spam folder as correspondence from new organizations often ends up there. Once you receive your first correspondence, please save the email to your address book. If you have not received a confirmation email or other correspondence from the organization within seven days of the event, it is your responsibility to reach out to us by email or phone.
